On Friday 29 July Justin Tomlinson, MP for North Swindon, officially opened Chain Testing House at the Thomas Homes Old Railway Quarter development. Chain Testing House is the latest phase of this development, and consists of 56 exceptional apartments situated in the historic Grade II* listed Great Western Railway Buildings.

Situated in the heart of what was one of the largest railway engineering complexes in the world, Old Railway Quarter is a location unlike any other. Swindon Railway Works opened in 1843 and by 1900 the works had expanded to employ over 12,000 people. A major contributor to the growth of Swindon, the Railway Works dominated the fortunes of the town until finally closing in 1986, and the last steam locomotive to be built there was in 1960.

Still retaining strong architectural links to its rich heritage, the heavy industry of the past is now giving way to impressive residential, business and retail environments, connected by quiet, pedestrianized walkways and tree lined avenues. Impressive neighbours include the National Trust HQ, English Heritage National Monuments Record Centre, STEAM Museum and of course the Designer Outlet Centre, providing extensive retail and dining opportunities on your doorstep. Old Railway Quarter is a truly unique development in one of Swindon’s most exciting and convenient locations.

The apartments at the Grade II* listed Chain Testing House provide a unique and surprising combination of historic glamour and contemporary style. Retaining the fully refurbished outer walls and roof, inside you’ll find a remarkable and impressive space. With light and airy covered walkways, modern glazing and original features throughout, the walkways provide access to each apartment and secluded inner courtyard – complete with the original chain testing pits.

The government sponsored Help to Buy scheme is available at Old Railway Quarter, and Justin Tomlinson, MP for North Swindon, was introduced to first time buyers who showed him their new home. He went on to say “We can hear the excitement in your voice as you talk about your new home in Chain Testing House purchased using Help to Buy”. An apartment at Old Railway Quarter can be purchased using Help to Buy with just a 5% deposit, thereby helping many people purchase the new home of their dreams.
